Domestic violence counselling service

Who is our domestic violence counselling for?

Women and their children who have experienced physical, sexual, emotional or verbal violence can have counselling at Rephael House. It is often very hard to come to terms with the harm inflicted by violence within the home. It is often even harder to overcome fear and shame and seek the help that counselling can offer. Our counsellors are experienced in helping women and children talk about these very difficult problems and manage the pain caused by a close relative.

Counselling can also help make sense of what has happened and find new ways of living and making healthy choices for the future. Children particularly often feel that they are to blame for their parents’ difficulties and counselling can help them understand what has been happening in their family and deal with the anger and guilt that often arise.

If you live, attend school or college or work in the London borough of Barnet or surrounding North London boroughs such as Harringay, Camden, Harrow or Enfield or anywhere in Hertfordshire you can have counselling at Rephael House.

Can I have counselling if I am still with my abusing partner?

We usually see women when they have already left the abusing partner but some women may feel that they want help to be able to leave a situation. We offer counselling in this situation if it is safe for the woman to attend and we will discuss this with you when you first contact us.

Can I attend counselling with my child or children?

Usually we will see mums and children separately, but the parent or carer is asked to meet with the child’s counsellor at the beginning of the counselling and at intervals throughout.

Will I have to pay even though I am on benefits?

Everyone who attends Rephael House has to pay something towards their counselling. In certain circumstances, we can offer people some financial help towards their counselling through our discretionary fund. As we are a charity dependent upon grants and donations, we cannot offer this help to everyone and spaces on our discretionary fund are limited.

How do I get to see a counsellor?
